Yesterday I wrote about being a hypocrite and walked through several alternatives to pie charts. Today I am sharing a Tableau Public workbook that I created based on comments to the last post.
I received questions about how the different charts would look for different time periods, so I’ve added:
- A year filter
- A parameter that allows you to pick a date format (e.g., view the data by Year, Year/Month, etc.)
You can download the workbook from the viz below or here.

Andy,
ReplyDeleteThanks for re-posting this with the additional views.
The conversation from your previous post got me to thinking about revisiting a couple of pie charts I had used in a recent dashboard. I ended up using a stacked area chart and it turned out fairly well, and better than just the pie chart because we were able to see the change over time (the original pie chart it replaced had no time series associated with it).
This is one thing I love about Tableau is the great community of users that we can all share and learn from!
Thanks again!
I completely agree Robert about the tableau community. I tell people that if they are looking to try something new that they should always check the forums and blogs first because it's likely someone has already done what they're trying to do.
DeleteI get quite a bit out of creating vizzes for this blog. It forces me to simplify as much as possible and hopefully improves my communication skills as well.
