Tableau Tip Tuesday: How to Create Monthly Radar Charts

In this week’s Tableau Tip Tuesday, I show you how to create radar charts that are based on monthly data. That is, the months go around an imaginery circle like a clock. Thanks to Jonathan Trajkovic for this great explanation and to Ed Hawkins for the inspiration.

  1. Hi Kriebel,

    Nice work of you!

I would like to know if it is possible to animate the tableau after publish,
like the gif you shown in the beginning of the video.

I know that there is a page function inside tableau, but I want to display the story over time to anyone who read this kind of dashboard. It seems like the tableau version is a bit "crowded" even with color highlighted and difficult to tell the story without mouse hover for detail.

    Thank you.

    Pong

    1. The Pages feature isn't yet available on Tableau Public, so you could record your screen and turn it into a gif.

  2. Hi Andy - I recently used your video and Jonathan's article to create a test Radar Chart of my own. It worked! Unfortunately, when I moved to larger data set, the polygon no longer fills correctly. Do you know this may be the case? I've constructed the two Excel sheets the exact same way - the only difference is a larger data set.

    1. What do you mean by "larger data set"? Do you mean more than 12 points around the circle?

  3. Hi Andy,

Such a great video - thankyou!

Firstly, is there any way of labelling the graphic having the months around it like Ed Hawkins did for his temperature graphic?

Secondly, is there any way of making the pages play on a dashboard?

    Thanks,
    Thomas

    1. I'm fairly sure you could add the month labels, but I haven't tried. You can download the workbook and give it a go. You can play the pages on a dashboard, but as soon as your publish it to Server or Public, that option goes away. I've been asking for it for years!

    2. Thankyou! It's a shame that it won't play on tableau public - maybe I could use a created gif in the dashboard?
