#MakeoverMonday Week 39 - Are tenants in cool neighborhoods less likely to be evicted?

This week Sophie Sparks thought it would be a good idea for me to live stream building my viz. You can watch the video here. I started with critiquing the original viz.

What works well?
  1. The title tells us what each line represents.
  2. The daily view helps show the major outliers and the dominant neighborhood.

What could be improved?
  1. The colors are hard to distinguish.
  2. The data is too granular.
  3. I'm not sure what the purpose is.

What I did
Watch the video to see everything I did and how I explored the data, then refined my analysis. Along the way I kept notes of things that stuck out to me like the Ellis Act, any outliers, and locations that are dominants.

I started by asking the following questions: When, Where, Why, Who, How. I explored each of these questions by building several charts for each and deciding which one worked the best together. I then built the dashboard, applied all of the formatting, clean up the tooltips, added some interactivity, and published. Done!

#SFBATUG: Using a calendar widget to control your dashboard

Last night at the SFBATUG meet up, I had the pleasure of giving a hands-on demo of how to create an interactive calendar in Tableau.  This is a follow up to a post I write in May 2012 detailing how to create the calendar. 

This example goes a step farther in that I’m using the calendar like a widget to control what I’m seeing on my dashboard.  What’s also cool about this method is that you can multi-select dates, something you can’t currently do with date quick filters.

Note that I also demoed how to hide a reference line behind a bar, which I wrote about here.

Finally, this dashboard is not a stellar example of design.  I threw this together quickly so that I could share it with the community promptly.

How in the World did I end up at Facebook?

I had a great time speaking yesterday at the Data Viz Summit in SF.  This was the first time I used Prezi and it worked out really well.  What fun would it be without taking some risks, including the two live demos I gave.  I would highly encourage you to give Prezi a try.  I don’t think I’ll use PowerPoint again.

I want to give a special shout out to Martin McGinn, Namit Raisurana, Heather Torres and George Lee for the great feedback during rehearsal.  It’s great to have such a supportive team and a culture that promotes openness and honest feedback.  It made a big difference.

There was a great speaker lineup.  The videos of the talks should be available shortly after the conference and I will post my talk, plus the others then.  And I will be writing a brief summary of my favorite talks. 

In the meantime, enjoy my Prezi.
