The Big Beautiful Bar Chart: Build It in Tableau with Map Layers

In this video, I show you how to build what I call the Big Beautiful Bar Chart in Tableau. It combines colored bars, a budget reference line, donut charts, and clean labels all in one view using Map Layers. It looks stunning and it tells a complete story.

Here's what you'll learn:

- How Map Layers work and why they unlock chart types Tableau can't build any other way
- How to set up your data with a five-point scaffold to draw filled rectangles as bars
- How to use LOD expressions instead of table calculations (and why it matters for Map Layers)
- How to add a dotted budget line, sales labels, region labels, and a percentage label as separate layers
- How to control mark interactivity, opacity, and alignment across multiple layers

By the end, you'll have a chart that looks like it took hours but follows a repeatable process you can apply to any dataset.

If you can build this, you're already operating at a high level. Next Level Tableau is where analysts like you go to push further, work alongside the best in the datafam, and get direct access to live training with me every week.

#MakeoverMonday 2024 Week 20 - Exporting Freedom, One Bullet at a Time

I struggled mightily with this week's #MakeoverMonday. My goals was to replicate the original visualization by Bloomberg.

I knew I need to create path to connect the US at the center to each country.

I wanted to make the US the center of the of the map.

Sounds simple, right? I made it way harder than it needed to be.
  • I overthought the data prep.
  • I forgot how to create the paths.
  • I couldn't get the math right to offset the longitude.

The coloring and labeling was straightforward for me.

Adding the US as a circle in the middle was pretty simple.

To overcome the problems I faced
  • I looked at a previous visualization I created using paths.

  • I opened the workbook and the data to see the configuration.
  • I replicated that set up by adding a second set of records to the data set.
  • Viewers on the livestream helped me figure out the math to offset the longitude.

The simplest way to explain the location of each country is to think of the lat/lon for the US as 0,0. Then you compare that to the lat/lon for every other country to create the offset.

I got there in the end. What do you think? Was the juice worth the squeeze?

#WatchMeViz: Can viral infections be cured with antibiotics?

I'm really surprised, though maybe I shouldn't be, about the results from a poll of 1206 Americans by KFF. They asked a simple question:

"Can viral infections usually be cured by antibiotcs, or not? Or do you not know enough to say?"

According to the results, women know better than men, as do adults with higher incomes and higher levels of education.

I took on this data set for Watch Me Viz for Makeover Monday week 14. Check out my final viz here. There's an image below the video.

#MakeoverMonday 2024 Week 11 - Housing Vacancies in America

This week I decided to turn Makeover Monday into a Workout Wednesday of sorts. I wanted to try a technique I haven't used in a while...showing elements on either side of a rank and filtering out the rest.

Want to give it  a try? Get the data here.

Requirements:
  1. Size - 1000x475
  2. Max 4 containers; no tiled containers allowed
  3. Filter out Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico
  4. Clicking on a MSA in the map highlights the MSA in the map and bar chart and changes the MSAs that are displayed in the bar chart
  5. The bar chart shows the rank of the MSA for the metric selected.
  6. There should always be 11 bars (though I didn't test the lowest rank).
  7. The label on the end of the bar and in the map reflect the formatting of the measure selected (i.e., either whole numbers or a percentage to one decimaal).
  8. Include an option to change the measure and to change the number of MSAs on the map.
  9. Create a mobile view
  10. NO LODS!

Have fun!

The Big Thaw: Exploring the Disappearing Antarctic Sea Ice

For week 30, we revisited a topic from 2018 week 15 - Arctic sea ice extent. During watch me viz, I focused on rebuilding:

  1. Visualizations from chapter 12 of the Makeover Monday book that showed how to add context to visualizations
  2. Several of the vizzes from 2018 week 15, each with their own unique take on the data
  3. The original viz by The Guardian
In the end, I created 13 visualizations before settling on the viz most similar to the original. There were some great questions today on the livestream. Thank you for that.

When you watch this video, you will definitely learn something new. You'll also learn a lot about how I think through problems when I run into them.

Enjoy! Click on the image below the viz to interact or click here.

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 28 - Global Passport Rankings

This week's data set only contained one measure, two years, and country names. This meant that I had to focus on charts that help visualize comparisons.

I created:

  1. Grouped bar chart
  2. Bar in bar chart
  3. Grouped bar chart with a gantt bar for the difference
  4. Diverging bar chart
  5. Histogram
  6. Butterfly chart
  7. Barbell chart
  8. Scatter plot
  9. Slope graph
  10. Trellis chart
  11. Jittered bar chart

Wow. I didn't realize I had tried so many chart types. No wonder the hour went by so quickly.

I didn't love any of the charts, so I went with the one that I thought was the best of the bunch. Check it out below the video.

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 26: The UK's Drinking Culture

This week I delve into drinking, a topic that has long been integral to British culture.

We covered lots during the live stream. I started by attempting to recreate the original, but couldn't get it to work. I went on to build:

1. Stacked bars
2. Stacked bars with labels above the bars (there are a few neat tricks in this one)
3. Circle on a dotted line
4. Donut chart, bar chart combination chart
5. Bullet graphs
6. A mobile view that's a different sheet

Building the mobile view hopefully showed everyone how to leverage sizing objects in a dashboard. If you haven't watched, I created a 2nd sheet that I could format separately to fit on a mobile device. To the user, it would look like the same chart.

The trick is to float the 2nd sheet and make it 1x1 size. Because it's on the dashboard, you can then use the sheet in the mobile view. Check it out, you'll like it.

I'm pretty happy with where I got to in the end. Enjoy the live stream and check out the viz below or here.

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 24 - Cereal and the Green Revolution: Yields vs. Land Use

At the global level, how has crop production changed over the last fifty years?

In this Watch Me Viz live stream, I analyzed how the yield and land use of producing cereal has changed over the last 50 years.

I really liked the original visualization, so I rebuilt it in Tableau. I learned how to use dynamic zone visibility, layout containers, and more. Check it out.

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 8 - The Cost Effectiveness of Protein Sources

This week we explored the cost of 20g of protein in various foods. During Watch Me Viz, I showed how to create toggles to allow the user to filter by vegan and vegetarian foods. I did this with parameter actions; if you want to learn more, watch the video below.

In the end, though, my fancy filtering with parameter actions didn't quite work out. I hadn't account for the option when the user might want to look at all foods. So I ended up using basic filtering. I overcooked the whole process, but I bet you'll learn something anyway.

I then went through the entire dashboard design process using containers, padding, shading and more. Check that out if you're interested in learning how to use layout contains.

Here's the #WatchMeViz recording, followed by the interactive viz. Enjoy and thanks for watching!

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 5 - Where can you find a cheap slice of pizza in New York City?

This week's data set was simple to understand, yet provided me quite the challenge to visualize. The data comes from Liam Quigley and it's a record of prices of slices of pizza he's tried in NY. Quantified self at its best!

Check out the recording below and you will learn how to:

  1. Prepare the data: calculations, joins, spatial intersections, and more
  2. Create maps: hexbin maps, map layers, spatial joins, using maps as shapes
  3. Create line charts and heat maps that are simple and effective (don't overcomplicate things)
  4. Build a dashboard using layout containers

Thanks for watching! There's an image of my viz below the video. Check out the interactive version here.

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 1 - The Change in Greenhouse Gases in the Atmosphere

2023 is here and #MakeoverMonday will be here the entire you to help you continue to learn and improve. Come on the journey with us each week. Build your portfolio. Showcase your skills. You just might get that job you've been seeking. It's happened, a lot, by participating every week.

For week 1, we were analyzing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from 1979-2021. The original visualization is quite simple.

We have CO2 and total gases on the left axis and the variance to 1990 on the right. Overall, the chart is pretty easy to read, with the exception of knowing that the red line is always compared to the 1990 value. That definitely needs to be more clear. It's also missing a title, so without the website it is posted on, you wouldn't necessarily know what it's about.

For my viz, I started by reproducing the original, but it doesn't look as good because the data we have starts at 1979. So you miss the big upward curve. From there, I focused primarily on making good looking sparklines that show comparisons with a parameter action. I also showed how to create an "area chart" with multiple colors. I'm going to create a tip video for it; I like how it turned out.

Here's the livestream and below is the visualization for you to interact with. The viz does not render properly on Tableau Public, but hopefully you get the idea.

I hope you continue to join me throughout the year so that we can learn together.

Have a wonderful 2023!

#MakeoverMonday Week 50 - Which Countries Get the Most Vacation Days?

This week's data set focused on the vacation time and paid public holidays (or lack thereof) of countries around the World.

I remember when I started working at Coca-Cola. I got 10 days of vacation time for my first 2 years. Then I got 1 additional day for each year thereafter. It was terrible, but unfortunately the norm in the US.

I started by trying to create a tile map of the World, but it was going to take too much manual renaming of the countries than it was worth. So I got the idea that I wanted to show rankings, which led me back to Workout Wednesday Week 31. The view was pretty simple to create; follow along in WatchMeViz below.

My final viz is below the video, or you can view it here.

#MakeoverMonday Week 49 - How good are Americans at perceiving demographics?

I really liked the original visualization by YouGovAmerica this week, so during Watch Me Viz, I spent the hour working to replicate it.

Easy to replicate:
  • Barbell chart with dots on the ends and a line connecting them
  • Coloring the lines by the larger value
  • Choosing the colors
  • Formatting the view (except the labels)

Challenges/things that should be easier:
  • Labeling the dots/ends of the lines; this took several iterations on the calculations
  • Creating the color legend as headers; I had to use reference lines, turn on totals, move the totals to the top, then work on the formatting to get them close. They still aren't perfect.
  • Creating the horizontal reference lines; this required me to create a dummy axis

While there are only 3 challenges, I estimate those three challenges took 75-80% of my time. I can only imagine how much more productive I could be if formatting didn't take so long.

In the end, I'm satisfied with how close I got to recreating the original chart. I like the additional context I added by coloring the lines connecting the dots.

If you missed #WatchMeViz, check it out below. Below the video is my final visualization.

#MakeoverMonday Week 47 - Worldwide Railroad Infrastructure Quality Rankings

This week was a fairly simple data set. Rankings by year by country for a single measure. One thing I found tough to get my head around was the 1-7 scale of the quality ratings. I converted the values to a 1-10 scale instead.

I had limited time for #WatchMeViz, so I quickly went through a few techniques you will find interesting:

  1. Recreating the original bar chart
  2. How to create a bump chart
  3. How to use a diverging color palette and alias country names
  4. How to create a ranked dot plot
  5. How to use parameter actions to sort the view
  6. How to use a filter action to remove the highlighting

This definitely ended up being the largest viz I have ever created (1300x3200). You can view the dashboard below the video. Click on the image to view the interactive version (or click here).

I hope you found it useful. If you did, please give the video a like and either share this post or share the video so that you can help others...pass it along. :-)

#MakeoverMonday Week 46 - The Cost of Cocaine & Heroin

Quite the interesting topic this week. I get an email from The Economist regularly and there was an article about the wholesale price of cocaine. That led me down a rabbit whole and I found the data, but also for heroin and also for retail prices.

On Watch Me Viz, I stuck with simple lines charts that compared the price for a country to the overall price for all of the countries in the data set. I allow the user to choose a drug and a country.

I then wanted to show how to Dynamic Zone Visibility feature works (if you haven't seen it, be sure to watch it back). In the end, a simple dashboard that compares the measures in two ways, allows for some filtering, looks good, and that's it.

Check out the dashboard below the video.
