Master Containers: Build an Interactive Tableau Dashboard From Scratch

In this video you will learn step-by-step how to create an interactive Tableau dashboard.

We'll start with a 2 datasets:

1. Beverage sales
2. Custom shape for US states

I will show you how relationships work in Tableau to combine these two datasets.

Once we create the data set, we'll build all of the charts we need, create a parameter, and apply the filters.

We’ll create:

1. Summary key figures (KPIs)
2. A custom map of the US
3. A monthly breakdown as a line chart
4. Two bar charts for products and customers

Lastly, we'll make the dashboard dynamic and interactive using different filter types and a parameter and make sure everything updates automatically.

As a bonus, you’ll learn a lot about working with containers in Tableau.

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 24 - Cereal and the Green Revolution: Yields vs. Land Use

At the global level, how has crop production changed over the last fifty years?

In this Watch Me Viz live stream, I analyzed how the yield and land use of producing cereal has changed over the last 50 years.

I really liked the original visualization, so I rebuilt it in Tableau. I learned how to use dynamic zone visibility, layout containers, and more. Check it out.

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 9 - Are you drinking a safe amount of caffeine?

My goal for week 9 was to take this original matrix table...

and turn it into an interactive chart that allows the user to know if they are drinking a safe amount of caffeine.

Check out Watch Me Viz below. Thanks to the feedback from viewers, we came up with the idea of letting the user pick (via parameters) their drink type, the drink size, and how many they drink per day. I calculated the mg of caffeine per ml and then multiplied that by the drink size and the number of drinks per day.

I spent time showing how to effectively use containers (you can never get enough practice with containers) and then showed how to create a mobile version as well. I think you'll learn a lot by watching and following along with the final build.

If you are looking for 1:1 or group coaching sessions, I can help! Get in touch here.

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 8 - The Cost Effectiveness of Protein Sources

This week we explored the cost of 20g of protein in various foods. During Watch Me Viz, I showed how to create toggles to allow the user to filter by vegan and vegetarian foods. I did this with parameter actions; if you want to learn more, watch the video below.

In the end, though, my fancy filtering with parameter actions didn't quite work out. I hadn't account for the option when the user might want to look at all foods. So I ended up using basic filtering. I overcooked the whole process, but I bet you'll learn something anyway.

I then went through the entire dashboard design process using containers, padding, shading and more. Check that out if you're interested in learning how to use layout contains.

Here's the #WatchMeViz recording, followed by the interactive viz. Enjoy and thanks for watching!

#MakeoverMonday 2023 Week 5 - Where can you find a cheap slice of pizza in New York City?

This week's data set was simple to understand, yet provided me quite the challenge to visualize. The data comes from Liam Quigley and it's a record of prices of slices of pizza he's tried in NY. Quantified self at its best!

Check out the recording below and you will learn how to:

  1. Prepare the data: calculations, joins, spatial intersections, and more
  2. Create maps: hexbin maps, map layers, spatial joins, using maps as shapes
  3. Create line charts and heat maps that are simple and effective (don't overcomplicate things)
  4. Build a dashboard using layout containers

Thanks for watching! There's an image of my viz below the video. Check out the interactive version here.

#WOW2022 Week 20 - Monthly Sales vs. Target

Today I ran a live #WatchMeViz session to show how I completed Workout Wednesday 2022 week 20. I messed up a bit, even though I had done the challenge before, but that's part of the learning process! I hope you find the session useful. If you have any questions, please leave a comment on YouTube.

#B2VB 2022/W3 - Olympic Medal Tracker

If you're not participating in the Back to Viz Basics community project yet, you should be. It's all about creating effective, simple charts, which is exactly what you need to be able to do before you build anything fancy. This will definitely help you master data visualization best practices.

For week 3, the objective was to build a text table of Olympic medal counts. Sounds simple, but unfortunately, building good looking tables isn't one of Tableau's strengths.

I also started the #WatchMeViz livestreams again. You can find all of them on this playlist. Thank you to those that attended live and asked good questions and left thoughtful comments. Below is the livestream as well as my final viz.

Until next week...

#MakeoverMonday 2021 Week 33 - UCAS Daily Placements

UCAS is a service that helps people find open placements universities in the UK (and hopefully place them). I found this particular data set quite confusing until I looked at this viz from UCAS. I then understood that we were basically looking at the number of applications from UCAS based on the time that has elapsed since exam results days. That probably took me a couple hours to wrap my head around.

I decided to create an exploratory dashboard, focusing on the number of applicants that were placed for women vs. men. Women use UCAS's services way more than men do.

Sample KPI Dashboard

This week at The Data School, I was teaching DS24 about dashboard best practices and how to effectively use containers. We picked a visualization from the wild (this one by Ryan Sleeper) as an example for us to rebuild and to learn about effective use of containers.

If you'd like to learn more, here are two videos I produced about mastering containers:

  1. Mastering Containers (Part 1)
  2. Mastering Containers (Part 2)

To see how we build the example below, feel free to download it and pick it apart. However, if you really want to learn how to build something like this, try to rebuild it based on the image alone. The videos above will definitely help.

Thank you Ryan for the inspiration!

#MakeoverMonday 2021 Week 24: Which States Have the Highest Average Student Loans?

If you watch this week's #WatchMeViz (below), you'll get a good look at how I use containers to create a dashboard. I didn't iterate very much this week, as far as the number of charts is concerned, but I did mess around way too long when trying to create a hex inside of a hex map. HINT: It turned out terrible.

How to Create a Marginal Histogram

Marginal histograms are a great choice when you want to display your data at different levels of aggregation in a single view.

You can think of a marginal histogram as a heatmap with a histogram to the side and the top of the heatmap. Each graph provides a frequency distribution.

In this example, I'm going to show you how to create a marginal histogram that displays a frequency distribution of the number of taxi rides by weekday and hour for January 2020 in NYC.

Download the data here.

Designing for Mobile First - Sample Mobile Sales Dashboard

Last week, I was teaching DS23 about mobile design. We reviewed the pros and cons, what to think about from a user and usability perspective, how to make the most important information easy to understand, etc.

We then picked an image of a mobile dashboard we found on the internet and worked together to rebuild it. We started by creating a default dashboard, then looking at what Tableau's Device Designer would do to it.

We then decided to create a mobile-only dashboard as our use case what executives on the go. This also gave us a great excuse to practice using containers.

Enjoy!

#WOW2021 Week 15 - Workout Wednesday Website Analytics

The requirements for week 15 are here. This is another super useful challenge as it helps you develop a dashboard you could easily use in your own organization.

My go-to blog post for working with and formatting time is this one from Jonathan Drummey. I'd say it's critical for solving this challenge. Also, think about the calcs for the reference lines and the BANs. As a hint, they're not just simple reference lines based on the measure on the rows. You WILL need to calculate the overall average separately.

Using Parameter Actions to Highlight a Segment of a Waterfall Chart

This viz is based on a tutorial from Ryan Sleep, which you can find here. Feel free to download the workbook to see how it's built.

A few techniques covered:

  1. Parameter actions
  2. Table calculations
  3. Gantt chart to build the waterfall chart
  4. Highlighting
  5. Formatting
  6. Calculated reference bands
  7. Dashboard layout: containers, padding

That's about it I think. For some reason Tableau Public isn't centering the text on the buttons at the top; they're fine in Tableau Desktop. See if you can rebuild it before you download it. You'll learn a lot and you'll make a great looking waterfall chart.
