What are Context Filters?

A context filter in Tableau is a powerful feature that allows you to isolate a specific subset of data and create a temporary data subset 

When you apply a context filter to your visualization, Tableau first applies the context filter and then performs calculations and aggregations based on the filtered subset of data.

How do they work?

By creating a context, you can optimize the performance of your visualizations by reducing the amount of data being processed.

When a context filter is applied, Tableau performs the following steps:

1. Identifies the data that meets the context filter criteria.
2. Performs calculations and aggregations based on the filtered data.
3. Evaluates any other filters and calculations based on the context data subset.

A context filter allows you to control the order in which Tableau applies filters and calculations.

UCAS is a service that helps people find open placements universities in the UK (and hopefully place them). I found this particular data set quite confusing until I looked at this viz from UCAS. I then understood that we were basically looking at the number of applications from UCAS based on the time that has elapsed since exam results days. That probably took me a couple hours to wrap my head around.

If you watch this week's #WatchMeViz (below), you'll get a good look at how I use containers to create a dashboard. I didn't iterate very much this week, as far as the number of charts is concerned, but I did mess around way too long when trying to create a hex inside of a hex map. HINT: It turned out terrible.

Containers...you either love them or hate them. And I want you to learn to love them.
