Why you should build a Tableau Public profile

If I were starting now, these are the 3 reasons I would build a Tableau Public profile. 

1. To build your skills 
2. To develop your career 
3. To be a part of a community

Makeover Monday Week 26: Who? When? What?

For Makeover Monday week 26, we challenged the Community to create a great dashboard that tracks the who, what and when of the project. Let’s start by looking at my original dashboard:


What works well?
  • It’s easy to see how many contributions have been made and how many people have contributed. 
  • The colors are good, but not great. 
  • The word cloud helps highlight the volume of people that have contributed. 
  • You can easily see which weeks had the best participation and which weeks drew the most new people. 
  • The heatmap on the 2nd tab does a good job of letting people see which weeks they have yet to complete. 

What doesn’t work?

  • It’s too hard to see the overall figures. 
  • The 2nd tab should be incorporated into the first. 
  • The word cloud is too busy. 
  • The cumulative graphs don’t provide much insight. 
  • All that’s important is the final number.
  • I don’t like the combination chart on the upper left. 
  • There’s no interactivity. 

I built my makeover in Tableau 10 so all I can post is an image. If you’d like to have a look at it, you can download it here. I’m really excited to see what the Community builds. I’m 99.9% sure someone will come up with something that blows us away.

Core Values and Culture: The Tableau Community DNA

I read this post from Ethos3 about their company core values and culture. As I was reading through them, I thought this matched nearly exactly with the values and culture of the Tableau Community. I've made some minor tweaks to their values to be more in line with the Tableau Community.
  1. Focus On Yourself First: If you develop yourself, then everything will change around you.
  2. Pursue Growth And Learning: Always continue to learn and grow. Read as many books and create as many visualizations as possible.
  3. Do More: Never settle for mediocrity.
  4. Develop A Magnificent Obsession for Everything and Everyone: Be passionate about everything and everyone you touch.
  5. Do The Ordinary Extraordinarily Well: Create WOW experiences by doing ordinary things in ways no one will ever expect.
  6. Be Humble: Understand that there’s always someone who can do what you do better, faster and cheaper.
  7. Live Uniquely: Be yourself. Find your authentic voice. Share your voice.
  8. Commit: As Yoda would say, "Do or do not. There is no try." No wishing or trying allowed. Period. Commit to every task.
  9. Embrace and Drive Change: Look for opportunities to change and improve yourself, your company, and the Community.
  10. Empower Others: The Pledge of Allegiance starts with “I” and ends with “We.” You can’t do everything by yourself.
