Makeover Monday: The Words of the Top 100 Songs of All-Time

For week 46 of Makeover Monday, we take a look at this Viz of the Day by Chris Love of the lyrics of the top 100 songs of all-time.

What works well?
  • Simple title
  • Good references

What doesn't work well?
  • Treemaps are generally a poor choice for showing the distribution of the words
  • Way too many colors
  • It's impossible to make any sense of the words and see any patterns

I know Chris knows better, so I can only assume he was experimenting when he created this. Have a look at this Tableau Public profile and you'll see this is quite out of the ordinary for Chris, especially since he's a massive believer in keeping it simple (KISS).

I played with the data for a bit and noticed that many stop words were included. This led me to doing a quick analysis of stop words versus non-stop words. Given the time constraint, I didn't create anything too fancy. I merely wanted to know frequencies of words and the artists that use them.

Dear Data Two | Week 37: Swearing

Well wasn't this an interesting topic...SWEARING! When we moved from Georgia to California, we all noticed a lot more swearing. Then when we moved from California to London, we noticed another uptick.

It was interesting paying attention to the swearing I heard around me. I know I definitely changed my behaviour this week knowing that I was tracking myself. That's been one of the outcomes I didn't expect from this project; changing my behaviour knowing I have to report on myself. Yet this week, I still swore the most. I'm chalking this up to me being with myself all of the time.

The most fun part of this week was a Christmas party we went to on Sunday. I was covertly recording all of the swear words I heard. Naturally, as people drank more, the swearing increased. Then they caught me tracking them. And the game changed. They starting blurting out swear word after swear word, knowing I couldn't possibly keep up with the tracking. So, I ignored that noise and only recorded "natural" swears.

As for the postcard, if it didn't take so long to create, I would have re-created it. I wish I had spaced out the words better for a less cluttered effect.

I'm incredibly curious to see how Jeffrey reacts to this. He was a great sport about my drinking card, given that he doesn't drink. And I've never heard him swear. Is this project changing his opinion of me? He certainly knows way more about me than he ever did before.

Check out my analysis below to see how I interpreted what the data was telling me.

Most Common Bible Words

In the Pastor's message in the March newsletter from my church, Dr. Tom Davis noted that "Love is mentioned 714 times in the Bible, yet “giving” or “possessions” is mentioned 2,172 times."

Naturally, my curiosity led me to the most commonly used words in the Bible (King James edition).

I'm not sure what source Dr. Tom used, but according to his calculations, "Love" would be about the 160th most used word and "possessions" would be in the top 60. I think he meant these to be expressions, not taken literally as words.
